Encourage interaction during co-writing

Collaborative writing in an online environment is becoming increasingly important because it gives all writers a chance to contribute irrespective of their physical location. Still, we all know how important it is to be able to share ideas and suggestions while writing together. This tip introduces you to a tool for interacting while working on an online document.

What do I need?

You a document that you need to write with others and some co-writers.

What do I need to do?

Share the document with your co-writers, for example, using the O365 apps so you can collaborate in real time. The Online versions of office programs include a built-in interactive tool so you can easily communicate with your co-writers.

When you are working on a document (Online), the top bar will display the names of persons who are also working on the same document. The Chat button will also appear. If you click it, the chat window will open on the right so you can send messages to your co-writers.

On the left side there is a word document and on the right side a chat

The conversation in the chat window will not be stored when you close the file. It is therefore suited for real-time communication with multiple users. The Comments tools enables you to pin a comment to a specific part of the text. You can also go over these comments later on.

What should I take into account?

Are you aware that you can open the chat window in the online versions of all office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote?

You will not have to save your work on a regular basis as the system will automatically save your file. Enjoy writing!
