Hybrid teaching: Planning hybrid teaching

Hybrid teaching situations require different kind of thinking and planning than teaching situations in classroom or remotely. It is necessary to understand and pay attention to two different groups of students at the same time, as well as the environment and technology that bind these two groups together. The teaching situation should be planned well in advance. A pedagogical script or a storyboard can be used to clarify how the course will progress as a whole and how hybrid teaching could and should be implemented in it.

What do I need?

Creating a pedagogical plan, manuscript, or storyboard takes time but they can be created using almost anything. It can be done alone or in a group. Choose a way that suits you: write or draw using pen and paper, a spreadsheet program or simple a text editor. Do it alone or together with your colleagues.

What do I need to do?

Familiarize yourself with the process of creating a manuscript or a storyboard. ABC and Carpe Diem offer guides and recourses for team-based designing but manuscripts can be as simple as this pedagogical script base by Essi Vuopala and Venla Vallivaara.

What should I take into account?

Examples of hybrid teaching-specific challenges to consider while planning:

  • When and in what situations is hybrid teaching necessary and advantageous to learning during the course?
  • Time management and pauses in hybrid teaching situation
  • How and what technology should be used
  • How to work with two groups of participants with different needs and ways of participation
  • Forming small groups seperately or creating mixed groups of remote and in classroom participants
  • Preparing for of potential challenges and technical problems specific to hybrid teaching situations
  • Backup plan if something doesn’t work as expected

There is no one right way to make a pedagogical manuscript or a storyboard. When the design document is done specifically with hybrid teaching in mind, it allows the course to be designed in a way that helps to grasp the new and unique challenges that hybrid teaching poses and for this reason it is worthwhile at least critically reviewing old plans and manuscripts before using them as a basis for creating a course with hybrid teaching.

The manuscript and storyboard, or parts of them, can also be used to outline the course to the students and they can be used to create new guidelines and instructions for the course.
