Designing Automated Transport Systems

During the course students will make a plan for an automated transport system through a guided process of familiariasing with the planning area, developing solution concepts and analysing the solutions' impacts on key performance indicators. In academic year 2025-2026, some of the contents from the discontinued course Business Models of Automated Transport Systems (5 cr) will be integrated to this course.

Student feedback from spring 2025: “The course Designing Automated Transport Systems was a valuable introduction to automated transport. For me, the group project combining theory and practice, along with guest lectures providing practical implementations and real-world insights, were the most interesting parts. The course motivated me to learn more so that I decided to take other ENACT courses to broaden my knowledge.”

Student feedback from spring 2026: “Collaborative activities, such as group work and discussions, enhanced my learning. Sharing ideas and perspectives with peers encouraged critical thinking and exposed me to alternative approaches to problem-solving.”

Learning outcomes – After completing the course student will be able to:

  • Understand the overall design context including different requirements and stakeholders relevant to the automated transport systems
  • Comprehend the impact of human characteristics in the design of automated transport systems
  • Apply human-centred design methods to solve the most common design issues related to automated transport systems in an operational design domain

Course level: Advanced

Credits: 10 ECTS
