Video: Constructive journalism and insights from the Kenyan case

Joy Kibarabara on Constructive Journalism in Kenya

Joy Kibarabara, PhD, Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University, has been the first in Sweden to write a doctoral dissertation on the subject of constructive journalism. She talked about her work at our Lunch Talk. Have a look at video from the link below.

Touted by some as the ‘future of journalism’, constructive journalism has been gaining traction in both academic and practitioner circles worldwide. Its key promise is that it possesses a ‘self-corrective ethos’ to established news practices (for instance, negativity bias, or problem-based narratives) associated with mainstream journalism.

But to what extent is it practical and achievable in daily news practice? Is constructive journalism more compatible with certain news topics, news genres or news media environment?

The video of the talk can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKjM5CTBVG8). In the 20-minute talk, Joy Kibarabara explores what constraints and opportunities exist for constructive journalism’s long-term sustainability. This and related questions are discussed from the perspective of Kenya’s journalism practice. The insight provides useful learning points transcending geographical contexts – helpful to both constructive journalism researchers and practitioners.
