1. General information
The summer school will be held at Tampere University (TAU) , Hervanta Campus, Tietotalo-building.

The University is located in Hervanta, part of the city located about 8 km south of Tampere city centre. Tampere is a city of about 220 000 people, located in the southern part of Finland. Finnair, SAS and Blue1 fly to Tampere from Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen. Ryanair flies directly to Tampere from, e.g, London Stansted, Frankfurt Hahn, Bremen, Dublin, Bergamo and Riga. Easyjet fly to Helsinki from London Gatwick. Travel instructions to the University can be found below.
2. Arriving by car:

3. When arriving at Tampere-Pirkkala airport (TMP)
3.1 A Taxi from the airport to Hotel Hermica or to the University costs about 30 EUR, and the journey takes about 25 min.
3.2 If you are travelling to the city centre you may also consider taking bus number 1L, which takes you from Tampere-Pirkkala airport to the Railway station in the city centre of Tampere. Bus schedules can be found here.
4. When arriving at Helsinki-Vantaa airport (HEL)
4.1 The easiest way to travel from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Tampere is by bus. Busses to Tampere depart in front the terminals and time tables and platforms are clearly guided at the terminals. Busses depart almost every hour, from Monday to Sunday.
The bus schedules can be found using the Matkahuolto timetable search by entering “Helsinki-Vantaa” and “Tampere”. The bus fare is about 30 € one way. The bus journey to Tampere central bus station (in the city centre) takes about 2.5 hours. Be advised that you may need to change bus at Keimolanportti truck stop; if this is the case all passengers will transfer to another bus and just follow the crowd. In some rare cases you might have to wait a few minutes for the continuind bus.
4.2 The most convenient train connection from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Tampere is via Tikkurila. Take bus number 61 from the airport to Tikkurila station, and the train from there to Tampere. The train journey takes ca. 1.5 hours and costs 26-40 EUR depending on the time. Train timetables are available here.
5. From Tampere city centre to Hervanta
5.1 You can take city busses number 3R, 13 or 20 to TAU (Hervanta campus). Bus number 13 stops in front of the university and the bus stop name is “TTY” (number 3734). The fare is 1.98 EUR (latest prices here) and the trip takes about 25 min. If you need to the change bus, your ticket is valid for one hour from the time of purchase within city limits. If you go to Hotel Hermica, take bus number 13 or 20 and get out one stop later than TAU (Hervanta campus) stop: bus stop “Hermiankatu 8”, number 3702, and walk 400 m southwest.
If you are at the Central Bus Station (Linja-autoasema), local bus number 5 goes to Hotel Hermica on Hatanpään valtatie street. Hotel Hermica address is: Insinöörinkatu 78, 33720 Tampere, phone number +358 3 365 1111.

5.2 Alternatively, you can take a taxi. From mobile phones and elsewhere in Finland, dial 0100-4131. There are taxi ranks at the railway station, coach station, Keskustori (central square), Pyynikintori square and in front of the Koskikeskus-shopping centre. The taxi fare to Hotel Hermica is about €20.
The meeting point at Tampere university is in the auditorium TB103 in the Tietotalo building (left most building in the campus map shown below).
Accommodation is available at Hotel Hermica, within easy walking distance (800 m) of the University.
Hotel Hermica is a low cost hotel within close distance to TAU (Hervanta campus). If you prefer higher standard hotels, then maybe this one isn’t your first choice. However, it is really CLOSE to TAU (800 m), which is a great benefit and most professors said it was a good choise so it should be ok for most students too. Summer School participants who book before the 5th of July from Hotel Hermica will get discounted prices:
1) Single room: 70 EUR/night,
2) Two person room: 80 EUR/night,
3) Three person room (2 person room + extra bed), please ask the hotel for possibilities
Prices are per room and include breakfast and sauna.
These special rates and booking quota are valid with a booking code “TAU Summer School”. Please mention the code when making a booking.
Note: The online booking for Hotel Hermica system is not available for Summer School bookings (the hotel will appear to be fully booked as we have made a block pre-reservation for these dates).
