The Symposium 2021 is the main event of the 10th anniversary of the Tampere Region Safety and Security Cluster. The main organisers are Tampere University and Business Tampere. They are supported by other Cluster members and partners. The language of the event is English.
The Symposium will be arranged as an online event in connection with Johtajuussymposium (Leadership Symposium) on Wednesday 8th September.

Teija Tiilikainen is the Director of the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats. Previously, she was the Director of the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and has been the Director of the Network of European Studies at the University of Helsinki. She has also served as Secretary of State at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. She was a member of the European Convention and a member of the Panel of Eminent Persons on European Security as a Common Project.
Dr Tiilikainen was nominated part-time professor (non-residential) at the European University Institute (School of Transnational Governance) in Florence. She is currently the vice-chair of the executive board of the University of Helsinki. In her research, Dr Tiilikainen has focused on issues related to European integration (institutional questions, the EU’s external relations, including Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy) and on European security policy.
Senior Research Fellow Marko Lehti is a deputy director of Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) and an academic director of master’s programme in Peace, Mediation and Conflict Research both at Tampere University. Lehti’s research in the field of peace and conflict research particularly focusses on peace mediation and dialogues, crises of liberal order, transformation of identities and the idea of Nordic peace. His latest books are “Contestations of Liberal Order. The West in Crisis?” (Palgrave 2020) and “The Era of Private Peacemakers. A New Dialogic Approach to Mediation” (Palgrave 2019).
Meri Koivusalo is professor of global health in Tampere University. Her educational background is in medicine and public health with further studies in London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She has previously worked with global health policy -related issues and intersectoral action. She has participated in advisory and expert work for the WHO, EU, Ministries and national and international nongovernmental organizations.
Sirpa Virta is Professor in charge of the new international Master’s Programme SAFER (Security and Safety Management) since 2019. She has been researcher at the Department of Political science (1986 – 1994), at the Police College (1995 – 1999) and since 1999 researcher and professor (from 2012 on) at Tampere University. Sirpa Virta has a long career in international police education (CEPOL, Council of Europe), a lot of international scientific publications, networks and research projects. She has the title of Docent of Defense University, and visiting professorship of security policy at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia.
