Media and Arts / Fine Art, Pre-task Spring 2024

The application period opens 3 Jan 2024 (8 am Finnish time GMT+2) and closes on 17 Jan 2024 (3 pm Finnish time GMT+2). The pre-task has to be uploaded to the application by the end of the application period: 17 Jan 2024 (3 pm Finnish time GMT+2) at the latest.

Please, read and follow the provided instructions carefully.

Pre-task instructions

The pre-task includes two mandatory assignments (1. Creative Assignment and 2. Portfolio Assignment). Grading is done with a maximum of 100 points. Based on the pre-task, our team of teachers will select the applicants to be invited to the online interviews.

We will not explain how to interpret the task. The entire pre-task must be available to us by the deadline.

The 2024 application period opens on 3 January 2024 (8 am Finnish time GMT+2) and ends on 17 January 2024 (3 pm Finnish time UTC+2). The pre-task must be submitted to the application form before the end of the application period!

Instructions for sending the files (VERY IMPORTANT!)

  • The pre-task can be submitted digitally only
  • Only the most common text document file formats (doc(x), rtf, odt, pdf), image file formats (jpg, png, pdf) and media file formats (mp3, mov, mp4) can be used.
  • Use screenshots or videos to present dynamic material like websites, blogs or games.
  • We will only evaluate files with a maximum size of 150MB/file (try to keep file sizes as small as possible).
  • A maximum of 19 admission task files are allowed to be sent regarding these admission tasks. If more than 19 files have been sent, we will reduce 10 points from the overall score.
  • You can access your application form and delete and resubmit files until the deadline on 17 January 2024 (3 pm Finnish time UTC+2). If you notice an error in a file you have sent, delete the old file and upload a new one. Please make sure to only submit one file once.
  • Please be careful and organised when submitting files and follow the instructions for naming files, file types, max file size, max number of files, etc.
  • Please note, that it might take a long time to upload all the files on the application form. Make sure to start uploading early enough.

Pre-tasks (all parts mandatory):

1. Creative Assignment (50 points)

1A) “All You Need is Empathy” – A Visual Narrative with Photographs
Create a series of six (6) photographs that tell a visual story about the experience of empathy. Your photographs should convey the emotions, challenges and benefits associated with empathy. You can use any style of photography (e.g. documentary, portrait, abstract) to capture this theme. The series should be visually cohesive and effectively communicate the concept of empathy.

Output: One digital jpg file where the six (6) photographs are arranged in a sequence to tell a visual story.

Name your file: Lastname_Firstname_EmpathyNarrative

Evaluation criteria: Visual storytelling, composition, emotional impact, and thematic relevance.


1B) “I, Me, Mine” – A Drawing of a Still Life as a Conceptual Self-Portrait

Create a still life as a conceptual self-portrait. Instead of your own face, create a portrait using the objects that are around and meaningful for you. Represent the idea of your own identity. Build the still life, observe and draw it on paper size A2. The techniques allowed are pencil, charcoal, pen, or ink. You can mix different techniques but keep your drawing monochrome.

Document your drawing process by photographing it with four (4) photographs: In the first three photographs, there should be you, your still life setup/construction and your drawing in process. The fourth photograph is of your finished drawing.

Output: Four digital jpg files.

Evaluation criteria: Visual expression, composition, observations, interpretations, and the incorporation of own identity.


1C)
“Now and Then” – An Analysis of Contemporary Art
Choose an example of a contemporary artwork which is meaningful to you. Analyse the artwork with a short text.

  • Add 1-3 images or screenshots of the artwork. Note: links are not allowed.
  • Include information about the artwork: artist(s), year of creation, dimensions/duration, medium.
  • State where and when you have seen/experienced the artwork.
  • Explain why this artwork is meaningful to you.
  • Analyze the relation between content, form, and message in the artwork.
  • Write a maximum of 350 words.

Output: One PDF-file including text and images from screenshots.

Name your file: Lastname_Firstname_Contemporary_Art

Evaluation criteria: Demonstrating an understanding of contemporary art, ability to analyse content, and level of written English.


2. Portfolio Assignment (50 points)

2A) Work samples (30 points) 
Prepare material that includes the essential aspects of your personal history in relation to the field of fine art (e.g. drawing, painting, photography). Choose 8-10 of your best work samples for the portfolio and add the following information in a separate text file (these samples of your work are to be sent digitally):

  • A short description of the contents (maximum of 250 words) to make it easier to understand your most important aims in the field of contemporary art
  • The year the artworks were made
  • Technique and size/duration of each work sample
  • In cases of teamwork or collaboration, state what your part or role was.

Output: 8-10 Media files (image/audio/video) and one text document

Evaluation criteria: Creativity, credibility, quality of content and level of written English


2B) Video selfi
e (10 points)
Make a video clip of yourself (max. length 40 seconds) tell us your name, age and summarise your analysis of your text about contemporary art (task 1C). In the analysis, talk about the main points. Within the video, you need to be present in a recognisable manner.

Output: One video file. Name your file: Lastname_Firstname_Portfolio_Selfie.

Evaluation criteria: Creativity, credibility, quality of content, level of spoken English.


2C) Personal information
(10 points)
Please provide information on the following:

  1. Work experience
  2. Hobbies and interests
  3. Career goals and future plans
  4. A task based on the Fine Art Study Path curriculum (NOTE! Choose the three courses that interest you the most in the Fine Art study path. Justify your choices. (max. 1000 characters)

Output: One text document file (A4).
