WellTech Lab Visited Tampere University’s CIVIT Centre

The core team of WellTech Lab at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) recently visited the CIVIT Centre (Centre for Immersive Visual Technologies) located at Tampere University’s Hervanta campus. The aim of the visit was to become familiar with CIVIT’s activities and technologies, exchange ideas related to research and development, and explore potential opportunities for future collaboration.

CIVIT (Centre for Immersive Visual Technologies) is a research infrastructure at Tampere University focused on immersive visual technologies. The centre provides high-level facilities, equipment, and expertise for researchers, students, and companies. It is one of Tampere University’s co-creation platforms and plays a strong role in both national and international research and innovation activities.

During the visit, we received a comprehensive introduction to CIVIT’s operations and had the opportunity to see and experience first-hand the technological expertise and infrastructure available at the centre. In particular, our team found the volumetric capture studio and the Omnideck, an omnidirectional VR walking and running platform, especially thought-provoking and inspiring. The wide range of cameras and their diverse applications also made a strong impression. There was still much left to explore, such as the robotic arm, which we did not have time to experience during this visit.

The discussions throughout the visit were highly engaging, and several shared areas of interest quickly emerged, particularly at the intersection of health, wellbeing, user experience, and applied technology research. Based on these discussions, several themes were identified where the expertise of WellTech Lab and CIVIT clearly complement one another. At the end of the visit, a return visit to TAMK’s WellTech Lab was agreed upon, along with a collaboration ideation session to further develop ideas into concrete actions.

The goal of the collaboration is to combine the strengths of CIVIT and WellTech Lab in applied RDI activities and education, thereby creating new and impactful initiatives to support research, teaching, and collaboration with industry. The visit to CIVIT reinforced our understanding of the significant potential that exists in inter-institutional collaboration. WellTech Lab and CIVIT share a clear common vision to develop new solutions that bring together technology, human-centered approaches, and real-world impact.
