How have you used something that you learned during your MEL studies in practice?
I have used Gert Biesta’s three purposes of education a lot in conversations about the what and why of different programs in schools. I have also become aware and been pushing back against neo-liberal influences in education. Particularly with regards to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, the datafication of education and the improvement agenda in schools.
How have you personally grown since enrolling in the MEL programme?
The MEL program exposed me to ideas that are not a part of the global, technology driven and neo-liberal view of education. I came to understand that the professionalism of educators relies of values, principles and judgements and not just the application of learning interventions. I gained a new appreciation for academic thinkers rather than just academic disruptors and evangelists of new ideas.
