VIDEO: Journalism and Peacebuilding in Somalia and Northern Ireland

Wali Hashi and Allan Leonard

What kind of roles can journalists and journalism take in post-conflict societies? What kind of relations with local communities and authorities are possible and fruitful – and what kind of risks are there? In the Nordic Forum Lunch Talk on Wednesday 20th March, we discussed these issues with two experienced professionals of journalism and peacebuilding, Wali Hashi and Allan Leonard.

You can watch the entire video of the 60-minute Lunch Talk on YouTube.

Wali Hashi has worked as a journalist for about 25 years both in Finland and abroad. Wali is also passionate about grass root peacebuilding in East-Africa, and he currently works as a specialist for the Finnish Foundation for Media and Development (Vikes) that has been operating in Somalia since 2014 and trained over 1000 journalists or authorities all over Somalia.

The idea of the “Forgiveness Campaign” that Wali has founded, is to use media to contribute peace and reconciliation in Somalia which has suffered civil war of the last decade. Here are three videos that tell you more about Wali’s work:
