Karri Palovuori, Professor of Electronics at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communications (ITC), has several years of experience in utilizing FabLab in teaching.
– This is a course assignment, which was a ‘treasure detector’. Technical name for the device is called a metal detector. But since in recent years also real treasures have been found in Finland, new name is justified, says Palovuori.
– At FabLab, students 3D printed the mechanical parts of the device structure. The mandatory part of work is to make a case for the device and nowadays it is extremely convenient to make it in FabLab with modern methods, adds Palovuori.
For this course, FabLab is essential and invaluable
– FabLab’s staff has been more helpful and friendly than anyone could have expected. Customer service is great although there are almost a hundred students on the course! praises Palovuori.
Development ideas
– Nothing is really missing, but the sector is continuously evolving. It would be good to have the latest methods in place also in the future. In other words, devices must be acquired and the staff must continue to learn to master those.
Have you used FabLab services in other contexts?
– Tens of times. For example every Christmas I laser cut greeting cards designed by my wife in FabLab. Consumer electronics is a course where we use FabLab services every year, only the assignments change every year, says Palovuori.
Taking corona safety seriously in FabLab
The FabLab space is perceived as a safe environment with clear instructions and use of hand sanitizer, face masks and disposable gloves.
– FabLab machines are positioned so that the safety distances are easy to maintain. In fact, I don’t think the restrictions there should have been so strict for that reason.
During the Corona period, this is one of the safest places to work on campus, Palovuori praises.
Also students agreed with the comment: The instructions were clear and the safety rules were well implemented. Despite the restrictions, the guidance from staff was available. Booking was easily done by email.
