The Faculty of Management and Business conducts high-quality, multidisciplinary, and international research and provides education in the fields of administrative sciences, business studies, political science, knowledge management, and industrial engineering and management. The faculty’s wide-ranging scientific community consists of approximately 3,500 students and more than 300 employees.

The societal role of the Faculty of Management and Business as an educator of future managers and experts is becoming increasingly important. Year after year, our degree programmes are among the fields that attract the most applications, and our students graduate and find employment very well compared to the national level. Year 2022 was characterised by the post-pandemic return to the campuses.

High-quality multidisciplinary research

In line with our research strategy, our faculty has succeeded in raising the level of our scientific activities. Examples of this include the continuation of the positive trend in the number of publications at level 3 of the JUFO publication forum and the Academy of Finland-funded Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research, which was established in 2022. We have also succeeded in raising the share of open access scientific publications. At the time of writing, the first ERC Consolidator Grant in the history of our faculty, received by Senior Research Fellow Mikko Joronen in January 2023, also attests to the high quality of research. His project investigates dwelling in crisis areas that are suffering from chronic violence.

In line with our research strategy, MAB has succeeded in raising the level of our scientific activities.

The multidisciplinarity of our research is evidenced by our strong participation and coordination responsibility in two of the University’s research platforms (Towards Effective and Equitable Welfare Services TRANSFORM and Climate-neutral Energy Systems and Society CNESS). The new professorships combining our fields highlight our role in Tampere University’s profiling areas of Sustainable Transformation of Urban Environments STUE and Games as a Platform, which are both funded by the Academy of Finland.

Societal interaction at regional and national levels

The faculty has established three research centres: ManCE (circular economy management), TASERR (security) and TAUGO (governance and evaluation). We have also launched our first mentoring programme for postdoctoral researchers. In the development of our Units’ research, we will utilise the results of the international research assessment carried out in spring 2022, in which the societal impact of our faculty was assessed as very good.

Societal interaction is built into our faculty’s activities. A large part of research is carried out in cooperation with businesses, public sector organisations and other stakeholders.

Our personnel also participate in legislative work and the development of administration at the national and regional levels in various working groups and by carrying out research and evaluations. In addition, our experts hold significant positions of trust in the public and third sectors and in companies that support the activities of the faculty. Interaction with stakeholders increased in 2022 as society reopened with the waning of the pandemic.

Sought-after international relations experts

Geopolitics, European security, and the role energy plays in them are central themes of our international relations research. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, our researchers have regularly given statements to the media or participated in societal debate on related topics. The same phenomenon has been seen in issues related to democratisation. Security was the theme of the Leadership Symposium our faculty organised in September, to which our five discipline units brought their research-based perspectives. The event was now held for the 11th time and carried out as a hybrid event after years of organising it remotely.

During 2022, we all but completed many years of work to consolidate our personnel structure. A part of it has been a generational change that strengthens the future of our faculty. It is manifested in the fact that there are currently 14 people in different phases of the tenure track career path at our faculty.
