Tampere University’s impact is generated through education, research, innovation, and societal interaction. According to its strategy, the University aims to build a sustainable world together with its partners and stakeholders.

Tampere University has a long history as a partner of public organisations and the third sector and of developing and pursuing new avenues in industry collaboration.

Knowledge for the needs of the future through cooperation in Centre of Excellence and Flagship programmes

The University contributes to the generation of knowledge, sustainable solutions, and economic growth in the Centre of Excellence and Flagships programmes funded by the Academy of Finland, and in the programmes of Academy of Finland’s Strategic Research Council. The Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research, which is the latest Centre of Excellence led by the University, was launched in 2022. The Centre produces research-based information to support the designing of tax and income transfer systems.

Partnerships provide opportunities for complementary cooperation

The University has long-term and complementary cooperation in the form of partnership agreements with the City of Tampere and Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle. The long-standing partnership with the Pirkanmaa Hospital District will continue and develop further with the new Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa, the largest of its kind in Finland. Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences participate in the social welfare and health research centre (Kylse) that will be set up on the University’s Kauppi campus. In Kylse, researchers and welfare and health care professionals from different fields will carry out concrete research and development work based on the customers’ life situations to promote the objectives of the ongoing Finnish social welfare and health care reform.

Members of our academic staff contribute research-based knowledge to support policy-making in different sectors of society, for example, by drawing up statements, holding advisory roles in governmental committees and serving on numerous working groups. Experts representing the University also frequently appear in national and international media. In 2022, more than 80% of scientific publications produced at the University were openly available.

Tampere University receives the most business funding of Finnish universities, and participates in several significant ecosystems. The objective of the SoC Hub (System-on-Chip) ecosystem coordinated by the University is to increase expertise in system-on-a-chip design. Technology and know-how are provided by Tampere University, Nokia and a group of Finnish businesses in the field. The first result of the consortium’s collaboration is a chip called Ballast, which was tested in Tampere in 2022. Soc Hub participates in the Chips from Finland initiative, which aims to strengthen microchip self-sufficiency and sovereignty in Europe and to bring fresh expertise and growth to the field in Finland.

Tampere University receives the most business funding of Finnish universities, and participates in several significant ecosystems.

Mika Rämet received the Societal Impact Award of 2022

The Societal Impact Award of 2022 was conferred to Professor Mika Rämet for his work on promoting awareness of the development and safety of vaccines. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Rämet raised the visibility and popularity of research-based knowledge on covid vaccines and vaccine research. Publisher of the Year title to three researchers

The support foundations conferred Publisher of the Year awards to three researchers. The recipients were Part-time Teacher Nina Savela from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Senior Research Fellow Angela Serra from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology and Postdoctoral Research Fellow Aleksandr Ometov from the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences. Mika Aaltola Alumnus of the Year 2022

Political scientist, Director at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs Mika Aaltola was presented with Tampere University’s Alumnus of the Year Award 2022. Read more about the Alumnus of the Year award.

Security discussed at the Leadership Symposium

The Leadership Symposium, held for the 11th time in the autumn of 2022, focused on security issues. The event was organised by Tampere University in cooperation with the City of Tampere, Business Tampere, the Wellbeing Services County of Pirkanmaa, Tampere Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Tampere Region, and Aamulehti. Fund-raising campaign yielded EUR 4.6 million

The Finnish Government’s matched fund-raising campaign to capitalise universities ended in June 2022. The donations received by Tampere University during the campaign totalled EUR 4.6 million.
