The Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology is a multidisciplinary high-quality unit for research and teaching in biomedical engineering, biotechnology, medicine, and health technology. We conduct internationally significant basic and applied research.

In 2022, the faculty’s operation reached a milestone as we celebrated our 50th anniversary. To celebrate, the faculty arranged, among other things, a Studia Generalia lecture series, which was streamed by several media. A history book on the faculty’s three most recent decades was also published. During those important years, the faculty was built into the current multidisciplinary entity.

In 2022, the faculty’s activities returned to the campuses after the COVID-19 pandemic. Learning procedural and manual skills are essential in laboratories and clinical teaching. The faculty conducts much teaching in small groups to ensure high-quality learning outcomes.

A record number of licentiate, medical specialist, and dental specialist degrees

All the degree programmes at the faculty continued to be popular study options. In 2022, 133 Licentiates of Medicine graduated, which is a faculty record. This was due to the increased number of entrant places since 2017. 32 master’s degrees were completed in the faculty’s Master’s Degree Programme in Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering. Approximately 1,500 students are studying in the faculty’s medical specialist and dental specialist programmes. In 2022, a record number of them also graduated: 167 medical specialists and 6 dental specialists. A total of 51 doctoral degrees were also completed.

At the beginning of 2022, laboratory operations moved from the separate Laboratory Services organisation to the faculty. During the year, clinical vaccine research was transferred to the new Vaccine Research Centre Finvac Ltd. The change was noticeable in the faculty’s finances because it signified a considerable drop in external business activities.

Active publishing and societal visibility

Research at the faculty is organised in six research centres, the most recent of which, VACCIM, began its activities in 2022. The main event of the research year, MET Research Day, once again brought hundreds of researchers, companies, international keynote speakers and partners to the Kauppi campus for two days. The faculty was one of the most active scientific publishers at Tampere University with 1,204 publications. The share of the faculty’s open access publications increased to nearly 87%. Societal visibility was high: the faculty’s people and research made frequent media appearances while we also drafted expert opinions (some 15 annually) and supported the work of governmental working groups and parliamentary committees.

The personnel received training in leadership and communication skills. After the pandemic, our eyes are on the next 50 years of success: meeting colleagues and groups, active laboratory activities and close cooperation with the wellbeing services county and other partners continue to be vital for the faculty’s success.
