Choosing the company form is an important step in starting a company. Different company forms are optimised for different kinds of business. The entrepreneurs’ legal status and tax policies vary between different company forms.

The company forms most typical of self-employment are private trader, cooperative and limited company. Other company forms include general and limited partnership. There are other company forms besides these – for instance, housing companies are governed by separate legislation – but they are not examined further in this Guidebook.
