BYOD Exam

The examiner publishes the BYOD exam in the TUNI EXAM system. This is an exam taken in a scheduled session in a campus classroom. You will need your own laptop to complete the exam. More details:

For what? A supervised exam session where you take either (1) an unrestricted BYOD exam or (2) a restricted BYOD exam.
When? The examiner sets the date and time. You take the exam simultaneously with other students.
Where? In a designated campus classroom suitable for BYOD exams.
With what? You use your own laptop to complete the exam in the TUNI EXAM system.
Who? The examiner is responsible for organizing and supervising the exam session.

Unrestricted BYOD Exam

An unrestricted BYOD exam taken in the TUNI EXAM system is the digital equivalent of a supervised paper exam in a classroom. Instead of pen and paper, you use your own laptop to complete the exam. Although the session is supervised, you are typically allowed to use various software, digital materials, and online services on your device during the exam.

Restricted BYOD Exam

A restricted BYOD exam taken in the TUNI EXAM system is also a digital equivalent of a supervised paper exam in a classroom. Instead of pen and paper, you use your own laptop to complete the exam. Only the TUNI EXAM system is accessible during the exam. You cannot access or use other software, digital materials, or online services on your device. You must download and install the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) on your laptop beforehand.

Registration

You must register for the course implementation in Sisu (TAU) or Peppi (TAMK), and your registration must be approved before you can book a seat for the campus exam session. The seat is booked in TUNI EXAM according to the teacher’s instructions. If you are not registered or haven’t booked a seat, you cannot take the BYOD exam.

After booking, you will receive a confirmation email to your TUNI email. If it’s a restricted BYOD exam, the email will include a .seb startup file. Note: Do not delete the email or the attachment — you will need it during the exam session.

Computer Requirements

Unrestricted BYOD Exam is typically taken on your own laptop, but the examiner may instruct using other smart devices.

Restricted BYOD Exam must be taken on your own laptop. A Windows device is recommended, but newer macOS versions are also supported.

The university unfortunately cannot provide loan laptops for BYOD exams. Contact the examiner at the start of the course if you don’t have a suitable device or are unsure about it’s compatibility. You are responsible for ensuring your device works properly during the exam.

Safe Exam Browser

In unrestricted BYOD exams, Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is not used.

In restricted BYOD exams, Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is used for exam execution and supervision. Once SEB is launched on your device, only the TUNI EXAM system and exam is accessible. All other internet use, software, and digital materials are blocked and you cannot access them. You will be able to exit SEB after you finish the exam.

Exam Session

Technical Issues

Technical support is not available during the exam unless the organizing party has informed otherwise in advance.

The system automatically saves your answers every minute, and the exam is automatically submitted for evaluation when the time runs out.
