Creating a maturity test as a electronic exam (TAU)

These instructions describe how a maturity test in Tampere University is created as an electronic exam in the TUNI EXAM system. The instruction is valid from September 1, 2024 and is written from the point of view of the thesis supervisor. Please be sure to also read the general instructions on the intranet: Maturity test and demonstration of language skills in degrees (tuni.fi).

Creating a maturity test

Thesis supervisors who supervise students working on their bachelor’s thesis or master’s thesis are responsible for creating a personal maturity test for their students in the TUNI EXAM system. After the electronic exam has been published, the student can book a time slot for the maturity test and complete the test in a supervised EXAM room. Please note! You do not always have to create a new exam from scratch, as you can copy an existing exam to create a template for your new exam.

Maturity test with or without language review

Basic exam information:

  1. Create an exam in the TUNI EXAM system and select Personal exam as the exam type.
  2. Attach the exam to a course implementation. Use the course code search field and select the right course implementation from the options.
  3. Give a descriptive name for your exam, such as Maturity test Elsa Etana
  4. Select the language of the exam.
  5. If the language of the maturity test will also be assessed, add the language examiner as an evaluator.
    • You can find the list of language examiners on the intranet page Maturity test and demonstration of language skills in degrees (tuni.fi). After you have added the language examiner to your maturity test, the TUNI EXAM system will send an automatic email notification to the language examiner.
  6. Enter the following instructions in the field Instructions displayed to the student during the exam:

A maturity test is an essay-type piece of professional writing. The length of the essay is 400-500 words. A maturity test is based on your thesis but must be structured as a stand-alone essay. The language of your maturity test will be assessed against the following requirements:

  • Select one of the provided topics and write an essay on the topic. Follow the assignment carefully.
  • Discuss your topic from multiple perspectives instead of only listing the facts you remember: contemplate, draw conclusions and justify your reasoning. Pay special attention to the readability of your text and use examples to support your ideas.
  • Make sure your essay forms a coherent whole with an introduction, discussion, and conclusion. Make sure your essay has a clear structure and is organised into clear paragraphs. Do not use subheadings, figures or tables. You do not have to add references to your maturity test.
  • Give your essay a title and check that your content matches the title.
  • Proofread your essay and make sure your writing is grammatically correct and written in a professional style.

Exam questions:

  1. The section name is Essay
  2. Add a new question to the section and select Essay question as the question type. As a rule, you need to write personal assignment instructions to each student taking a maturity test. Alternative assignments are possible, but you should type them all in the same question field.
  3. Select Pass/Fail as the grading scale.

Assessment settings:

  1. Select Whole course grade as the exam type.
  2. Select Pass/Fail as the grading scale.

Publication settings:

  1. Select the exam period of the maturity test. For maturity tests, the exam period is two weeks unless you have agreed otherwise with the student taking the test.
  2. Select 115 minutes as the exam duration.
  3. Add the student as the exam taker: Type the student’s name in the search field, select the correct student from the list, and click Add.
    • If you cannot find the student, ask the student to login to the TUNI EXAM system. After the student has logged in, you can add him or her as a participant.
  4. Save and publish your exam. After you have published your exam, the student will receive an automatic email notification and he or she will be able to book a time slot for the maturity test from the TUNI EXAM system.

Assessing a maturity test

The content of the maturity test is assessed by the thesis supervisor. If the language of the maturity test is also assessed, a language examiner will carry out a separate assessment. The content and language of a maturity test can be assessed in the TUNI EXAM system at the same time. After the student has completed the test, the system sends a notification to the thesis supervisor and the language examiner. In practice, this means that the TUNI EXAM system sends you an email on Mondays, showing how many submissions are pending assessment in the system. To find the submissions that are waiting to be assessed, you can also go to the Unassessed tab in the TUNI EXAM dashboard or the Study attainments tab in the exam.

The thesis supervisor assigns the final grade for the maturity test in the TUNI EXAM system. After the grade has been locked, it is automatically transferred to the Sisu system where it is confirmed. The TUNI EXAM system sends the student an automatic email notification after the maturity test has been assessed. The student can see the grade and the feedback in the system. If the grade is Fail, the supervisor must prepare a new maturity test for the student. If the failing grade is due to the language of the maturity test, it is not necessary to prepare new assignment instructions and only the language will be assessed. The thesis supervisor will assign a final grade for the revised maturity test that has been approved by the language examiner.
