The new access control system begins in Atalpa and SportUni City Centre – virtual access cards introduced

SportUni City Centre Reception

If you use the facilities in the Atalpa building on Tampere University’s city centre campus, please note that a new access card will be introduced in summer 2025. This change is due to the implementation of a new campus-wide access control system. We recommend that student activate the new virtual access card to their smartphones. Staff members can either activate the new virtual access card or obtain a new physical access card. The Atalpa building houses the SportUni sports centre on the city centre campus as well as the upper secondary school of Tampere University Teacher Training School.

The current access control system in Atalpa will be replaced in summer 2025. The exact date will be announced later once the installation project begins. After the switch, existing access cards will no longer work in the Atalpa building. During the transition period, users will need to use a new access card to access Atalpa and continue using their old access card to access other campus buildings.

New access card required to access the SportUni sports centre on the city centre campus – customers will receive instructions by email

The SportUni sports centre is located in the Atalpa building. If you have paid SportUni’s sport fee, you will automatically receive instructions to your tuni.fi email address. This email will be sent from the address stidmobile-id@stid.com. The email will instruct sport centre users to download the STid Mobile ID mobile app to their smartphones and then activate the new virtual access card through this app. This method is the preferred option for students to obtain access rights. If you are unable to start using the virtual access card to gain access to the sports centre on the city centre campus, you can collect a new physical access card from SportUni’s customer service desk, which is located on the ground floor of the Atalpa building.

Staff members can either begin using the virtual access card or collect a new employee ID card (which includes access rights to authorised areas) from the information desk in the Main Building (Päätalo) on the city centre campus.

Staff at the upper secondary school of Tampere University Teacher Training School will receive separate instructions regarding access to their facilities.

Gradual rollout of the new access control system across campuses

Tampere University will gradually implement a new access control system across all campuses by the end of 2028. The project began in late 2024 at the Nekala unit of the Teacher Training School. On the city centre campus, the rollout will begin with Atalpa and then continue to Virta, Linna, Pinni B and the Main Building. After the city centre campus, the project will move to the Kauppi campus and finally to the Hervanta campus. The new system will also be in place at the new SportUni Hippos gym when it opens in August 2025. Preparations have also been made for Tampere University of Applied Sciences to adopt the same system in a few years’ time.

The outdated access control systems, which have reached the end of their life cycle, will be replaced with the highly secure LenelS2 OnGuard system. The project has been contracted to Caverion Suomi Oy.  In addition to replacing the physical terminals, the process for granting access rights, for example, to staff and students will be automated during the project. The replacement of the old devices may temporarily disrupt campus access routes. As the project progresses, the unified system will simplify movement between buildings and campuses. Once the project has been completed, the same access control system will be implemented across all the campuses of Tampere University.
