What is “Students on the Move project”?

Students on the Move is part of the national program, which is strategically managed by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish National Agency for Education. The aim of the program is to increase physical activity in the daily life of higher education institutions, thereby directly impacting the well-being and study/work ability of students and staff.

The Students on the Move project is a joint initiative between TAMK and Tampere University, funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. The project has been granted continued funding for the period 1.8.2025–31.7.2026.

Below you’ll find useful links about the Students on the Move, its goals, and implementation in the Tampere Universities:

Movement and Breaks as Part of Teaching

Adding movement to teaching situations is worthwhile, as it positively affects students’ alertness and thus increases learning opportunities and student well-being. Higher education students sit for long periods during the day, on average more than 10 hours. Prolonged sitting and inactivity lead to, among other things, body stiffness and health risks. Movement during studies improves attention and concentration and enhances memory function, resulting in better learning outcomes.

Here are some good tips on how to add activity to teaching situations:

How Can I Reduce Inactivity?

Excessive inactivity and insufficient breaks pose challenges to the study ability and well-being of higher education students. This brings health risks that can only be prevented by reducing sitting and inactivity and increasing breaks. A short break every 30 minutes throughout the day is enough!
